AdVal score a direct hit with conversion of tank gunnery training

AdVal Learning Solutions has been awarded a £100,000 plus contract to convert computer based training materials to support gunnery training for Alvis Vickers Ltd (AVL)’s Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank.

The contract is part of AVL's post design services (PDS) contract with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD)’s  Defence Logistic Organisation.  AVL is the UK’s leading supplier of armoured fighting vehicles and is the design authority for the Challenger 2, which played a prominent role during the recent conflict in Iraq.

The AdVal contract encompasses the conversion of legacy training materials developed when the tank first entered service in 1998 and that need to be replaced due to obsolescence and supportability.

The work will include conformance to the Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) now
being promoted by MoD, developed by the Advanced Distributed Learning organisation on behalf of US Department of Defence to promote reusability and maintainability of CBT and e-learning materials.

Updating of the materials will also permit changes to the training to be incorporated as a result of experience at the British Army's
Royal Armoured Corps Gunnery School in Lulworth, Dorset where tank crews have been instructed since the vehicles first entered service.

Peter Bonfield, Programme Director of AdVal Learning Solutions says:

"When we were asked to review the current training materials and present ideas for their replacement we were keen to promote the benefits of adopting SCORM, particularly given the supportability issues that MoD were experiencing with the legacy materials.

“Our solution incorporates many of the techniques and standards we have adopted for the Engineer Tank Systems (ETS) project, a £2.5M contract with AVL for the development of the training package for two new armoured engineering vehicles, TITAN and TROJAN, which are due to enter service with the British Army next year.

“This contract provides an excellent opportunity for us to demonstrate the adaptability of our technology to suit other training requirements and we are committed to delivering a first class solution to the MoD."

Says Kate Roberts, AVL Communications Manager:

“We were impressed with the solution that AdVal Learning Solutions promoted in response to this requirement and the fact that they have recommended the adoption of SCORM shows that they understood the supportability aspects associated with legacy training packages of this type."
