Engineer Tank Systems Classroom Training Capacity Boost

E-learning is a major component in a training package being finalised by AdVal Learning Solutions (ALS) for the British Army’s Engineer Tank Systems (ETS).

ALS has also been contracted to increase its delivery of classrooms to Bovington to meet a ramp-up in training delivery required when the ETS vehicles enter service.

The ALS package is being delivered on behalf of BAE Systems Land Systems to the RE Wing of the Driving and Maintenance School at Bovington and the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (SEME) in Bordon.

Three courses are being developed: one for RE crewman, one for REME Vehicle Mechanics and one for REME Electronic Technicians.

The courses include a major e-learning component to be delivered via a dual screen workstation.

AdVal has been contracted by BAE Systems Land Systems to provide six additional temporary classrooms at a contract value in excess of £300,000.

"The original contract was for five fixed classrooms but when the audience to be trained was fully scoped, this proved to be inadequate for the training schedule required to bring the vehicles into service" said Peter Bonfield, ALS managing director and the ETS programme director.

The additional classrooms will have built-in air conditioning and heating and are to be installed at Bovington complete with the multimedia training package that AdVal is already contracted by BAE Systems Land Systems to develop.

"Once the initial surge training phase is complete, the classrooms could be relocated to RE units to provide a flexible training resource for ongoing training needs," said Peter Bonfield.

Aylesbury-based AVL’s training package supports the introduction of two vehicles to service: TITAN - an armoured bridge laying vehicle, and TROJAN – an armoured obstacle clearing vehicle.

Editor Note:

AdVal Learning Solutions’s blended training package to support ETS is being delivered to the RE Wing of the Driving and Maintenance School at Bovington and the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (SEME) in Bordon.

Three courses, from 7-11 weeks in duration, have been developed:

Project deliverables include:

  • Electronic classroom facilities
  • Computer Based Training (CBT) materials providing underpinning knowledge of system location and operation
  • Desktop simulation of vehicle system operation and fault diagnosis
  • Presentation materials used to support instructor led training
  • Interactive DVD Video
  • Computer based assessments
  • AdVal’s SCORM conformant Learning Management System (ALMS)
  • Provision of initial Instructor Training
  • ALS ETS training will provide all the elements that the Army training schools require to commence training when the new vehicles come into service.

Once the package has been developed, AdVal will also provide initial training to the Army’s instructing staff to ensure that they are competent to deliver the training prior to the first conversion training courses being undertaken.
