Prochem's Facelift for the Dome

Prochem technology is helping keep the fabulous Millennium Dome in peak form

Two Prochem Performer truckmounted extraction machines lie at the heart of a customised cleaning head developed by Gordon Leicester and applied by his Hickstead-based access plant company Facelift Access Hire within a £1 million contract to clean the inner liner of the Dome's massive ceiling.

Gordon admits that Facelift has never got involved in cleaning until now.

He said: "We were supplying cherry-pickers to contractors building the Dome. When they came to us with a need for cleaning the ceiling, I designed this machine around the Prochem truckmount cleaning unit.

"Our brief was to clean an area of 20 acres up to heights of 50 metres," said Gordon. "Clearly, we needed a very powerful vacuum source and the Prochem Performer fitted the bill."

The Performer is mounted on a 185ft reach cherry-picker fitted to the bed of a 32-tonne Volvo truck. It is operated by a single technician and works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Dome's Greenwich site.

The two Performer units were supplied by Prochem through its dealer Trafalgar Cleaning Equipment. The contract commenced in August of this year and is ongoing.

Facelift was founded in 1984 by Gordon Leicester with a single access truck mounted access platform and since has grown into the UK's largest independent access platform hire company, specialising in truck and trailer mounted platforms.

The company has one of the most modern, comprehensive fleets in the UK. About 70% of its platforms are less than 3 years old and Facelift has a replacement programme of 6 years, depending on the equipment. Over the past two years, the company has invested over £1.5m on 32 new platforms.

What are truckmounts? Totally self-contained, professionally-fitted into panel vans at Prochem's dedicated facility in Surrey, these highly powerful extractor cleaning machines are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Prochem is Europe's leading supplier of these machines, which can be used for cleaning carpets, upholstery as well as hard surfaces. They are also widely used for cleaning up after fire and flood damage.
