Regent extends cleaning contract for National Blood Service

The contract held by Regent Cleaning to clean premises and mobile transfusion units on behalf of the National Blood Service (NBS) has been extended to further UK regions.

Surrey-based Regent, which secured the contract to clean for the NBS in the Midlands and South West England in 2004, is now also cleaning for London, South Eastern England regions and in Liverpool, where the Service operates its largest site.

Part of the National Health Service (NHS), the NBS delivers blood, blood components, blood products and tissues from 15 blood centres to anywhere in England and North Wales.

The organisation collects, tests, processes, stores and issues 2.1million blood donations from around 1.6 million donors annually and provides specialist medical advice and clinical support to hospitals, as well as educating and training transfusion machine specialists.

The NBS took on responsibility for transfusion centres in 1994, along with blood services in north Wales. Initially consolidating services into three regions, it became fully national in April 2000.

Regent operates scheduled and deep cleaning across its NBS sites. In addition to blood donor centres, office, team bases and vehicles, the company is responsible for ‘cold rooms’ and research laboratories, where a high standard of cleanliness is an imperative.

The NBS works to the NHS Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standard, audited by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Said Regent operations director Jonathan King: "We are working closely with the NBS to both ensure that high standards of cleanliness are achieved as well develop systems that allow the Service to be audited by the MHRA."

NBS facility manager Wayne Tannahill added:

"Until Regent came on board, we had a very fragmented service in the south west that was not always meeting required standards."

"Regent put this right, installing new management that worked through training to get the best out of staff," he continued.

"As a consequence, cleaning issues take up far less of NBS management time than they used to, which is a clear benefit to our organisation."
