Merck appoints Regent to R&D site cleaning
International specialist chemicals company Merck has appointed Regent
Cleaning to provide cleaning services to its research and development
(R&D) building near Southampton.
The 7.6 billion euro turnover German-based manufacturer of liquid crystal
and organic electronics materials set up an R&D facility on the
University of Southampton Science Park at Chilworth in 2000.

Merck's product portfolio currently encompasses more than 15,000
chemicals and reagents, active ingredients, test kits and analytical
systems for applications in flat panel and flexible displays such as TV,
cell phones, laptops computers, security bar codes, photovoltaics and
other topic areas.
Merck's R&D site specialises in liquid crystal development, staff - some
of whom are graduates from the University of Southampton - are also
engaged in other areas of research activities related to the company's
core and future business activities including organic semiconductors and
new methods of printing electronic materials. Merck has a worldwide
customer portfolio.

Cleaning to the 5,500 sq m premises is provided by a team of two cleaning
operatives and one working supervisor managed by Coventry-based Regent's
regional office in Godalming.
Day-to-day, the team cleans offices, circulation areas, toilets and
laboratories. Periodic cleans are provided to exterior cladding and
windows and the entire building is subjected to a full annual clean.
Regent also provides Merck with feminine and toilet hygiene and pest
control services.

Chilworth's facilities manager Nick Clear places a high value in Regent's
operational skills.
"Regent Cleaning provide us with an excellent service, while still
maintaining a family businesses feel in is overall approach in both
management style and service delivery.
"Regent understands our high level service expectations which have been
clearly identified in our contract. We monitor performance regularly
against a set of defined KPI's. Regent has maintained a good consistent
level of service, tempered against a market competitive price. Regent in
my opinion is a good service partner.
Founded in 1986, £26 million turnover Regent Cleaning's operates from 10
regional locations managing a staff of 4,500. The company was acquired
last year by France's second largest cleaning company, 1.3 bn euro
turnover Samsic Group.
Regent Cleaning's input at Chilworth will be extended later this year
when the Merck R&D unit gains a further 410 sq m of laboratory and office
space in a large extension to its current premises.
