Regent Cleaning cleans UK's largest blood centre

Regent Cleaning has further developed its contract to NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT)

The Coventry-based contractor cleans 56 sites on behalf of NHS BT including its premises at Filton, Bristol, home to one of the world's largest blood processing centres.

A special health authority in the NHS, NHS BT is the organ donor organisation for the UK and is responsible for matching and allocating donated organs. Its remit also includes the provision of a reliable, efficient supply of blood and associated services to the NHS through the National Blood Service (NBS).

Completed in 2008, the £60m Filton site employs 550 staff testing close to one million donations and processing 630,000 units of donated blood annually.

Its manufacturing hub operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and uses cutting-edge technology in blood filtration, conveyor and storage systems.

In addition to the Bristol Institute of Transfusion Science, Filton is home to the NHS Cord Blood Bank, the world's fourth largest internationally accredited cord blood bank, currently storing over 13,500 donations of life-saving cord blood.

The British Bone Marrow Registry is also housed at Filton which holds the details of more than 300,000 potential bone marrow donors who have provided over 1,500 stem cell donations for patients in the UK and around the world.

NHS BT Filton consists of two connected buildings that provide approximately 5200m2 of workspace, including office accommodation, laboratories, clean rooms and a large manufacturing area. The larger open-plan working spaces allow for future reconfiguration to provide a more flexible environment.

In addition to a team of seven cleaners under a site manager, Regent also provides a staff of six porters at Filton. The project overall is managed by Regent's Cardiff office.

Regent operates scheduled and deep cleaning to offices, circulation and storage areas, library, toilets and related wet areas, and meeting rooms.

The company is also responsible for cleaning 'cold rooms', research laboratories and related contamination areas, where a high standard of cleanliness is an imperative.

Work undertaken includes floor, surface and window cleaning to a colour-coded regime. Extensive scrubber-drying cleaning is undertaken latest technology from ICE and Minuteman.

Regent has additionally carried out a deep clean of NHS BT mobile transfusion units.

Its Healthcare division continues to expand market share: the company has recently been appointed cleaning contractor to Somerset & Taunton Primary Healthcare Trust.
